Looking Forward To Summer

I had almost forgotten about this until watching an episode of Portlandia tonight. It was such a definitive song for my summer of 2010. Washed out reminds me of waves, xanax, pink sunsets, and driving around Los Angeles.

Animal Nightlife

While at Amoeba Records this afternoon, a record cover by Animal Nightlife caught my eye instantly. It was just completely chic. I was almost tempted to buy the record simply by the cover but I had to stop myself. I wanted to listen to their music first.

Sophisti-pop in the vein of The Style Council at its best!

Spring/Summer 2011 Inspiration

The wave of 90's influence is rampant lately. But there is too much irony out there. I remember the decade quite well actually because I lived it. It was my high school years. Although it was a major source of anxiety, I can look back at it fondly now.

I loved the music. But I went through all the necessary phases first - punk/revival ska, gothic/industrial, mod/skinhead - some of it permanent on my body by way of tattoos. At each phase, I dove in wholeheartedly. I dressed the part. I lived the part. I remember watching Quadrophenia on a nightly basis for months and even wore a pair of Levi's 101's wet for an afternoon to get the right fit. During that same mod phase, I collected Fred Perry Polo's, Ben Sherman gingham shirts (pre-US market), and records upon records.

I'm not going to revert back to that time of my life. My inspiration for Spring/Summer 2011 is really the music of 90's as a whole. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots...but also more obscure shoegazer.

Spring 2011 for me is going to be more Westside of L.A. Think Brentwood Country Mart in Free City and New Balance with James Perse drinking a latte from Caffe Luxxe.

I want Spring/Summer 2011 to be very relaxed and understated but very indulgent at the same time.

Slowdive is the perfect example of 90's understatement. Shoegazer never made it mainstream yet the style has greatly influenced many artists today.

Caffe Luxxe is the Westside L.A. coffee establishment.

Acne basics. This is all I want to wear ALL SEASON! They feel so luxurious yet absolutely plain and simple.

Brentwood Country Mart. There is absolutely no "country" about Brentwood. It almost has the feel of New England meets celebrity.

God. A few years ago, I frowned upon Free City. But now I get it. I love it.

Gwyneth in Free City. The woman everybody loves to hate (along with Madonna). But she is amazing. The same reason people hate her is exactly why I'm completely fascinated by her.

New Balance 993. I've worn it for years now. My friends teased me for months after I bought my first pair but when photos of Stefano Pilati wearing New Balance 993's with Naomi Campbell surfaced, I knew I hit it on the nail.

Tod's Gommini Driver. Enough said.

On the same day we moved in last year, Franc was moving out of the same building. He left us his work table, the same table used to help make his editorial headpieces. Andrew and I finally found a media console that we liked and seemed fitting for our loft. We reconfigured the living space. The end result was more room and comfort. Coincidentally, Franc has moved back in the building.

My favorite look and shoes from the new collection.

Zadig & Voltaire "Tunisien Monastir"

At one point, I amassed 16 of these "Tunisien Monastir" shirts - along with several pullovers and pants. I'm down to half of that now. They are the most comfortable shirts for sleep.

Bobby's 29th Birthday

Dinner and drinks at Tony's in Burbank, a dive bar gentrified with a vegan sausage menu. We played 90's alternative music on the jukebox.

Bobby wore Givenchy shirt, Comme des Garcons jacket, Dior Homme jeans, and Balenciaga boots.

Spring Forward: Le Labo Rose 31

I got this from Andrew's parents for Christmas. It's officially my scent for Spring/Summer 2011.
